Worldwide, 53% of the population is active on social media. With so many users all posting constantly, how do people achieve online fame? Is there a method to going viral, or is it simply because people connect with the content they see?

On a daily basis, over 500 billion posts are being uploaded onto Facebook, and Twitter users are posting over 500 million tweets.

There are many sites that attempt to give tips and tricks on how to boost your content to achieve viral status. They list things you can do to improve your content and sharing methods. On the contrary, other sites describe online fame as something difficult to achieve, and the process is not something that can be easily defined.

Let’s look at some examples of viral content.

Do any of these photos and videos look familiar?

Another aspect to consider is content that is created for something other than social media, but is posted online and shared wildly. A prime example of this is the “Pants on the Ground” guy from American Idol. His audition was simply intended to be viewed on the television show, but was posted online and went viral. Even though he didn’t make it past the first round of auditions on Idol, his online fame was huge.

It’s up to you to decide what this viral content has in common, other than the fact that it has been viewed by millions of people. Is there a method to the madness, or is it something more?
