It’s Not Just a Camp! These Kids are the Future!

Many children across the country are growing up without the proper means that are needed in order to strive and have a successful future. The things that these kids and teenagers are coming to know as the “social norms” in life are terrifying. There are many summer camps across the country, but what many do not realize is how many are not for profit and for “underprivileged”. USA Summer Camp, describes underprivileged camps as a normal camp experience for those that wouldn’t typically be be able to afford the camp

What is an “At Risk Youth”?

According The Glossary of Education Reform, the term at risk is used to describe “students or groups of students who are considered to have a probability of failing academically or dropping out of school.”  The term may be applied to students who face circumstances that could jeopardize their ability to complete school, such as:

  • Homelessness
  • Incarceration
  • Teenage pregnancy
  • Serious health issues
  • Domestic violence
  • Transiency (as in the case of migrant-worker families),
  • or other conditions

It may also refer to:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Low test scores
  • Disciplinary problems
  • Grade retentions
  • or other learning-related factors that could adversely affect the educational performance and attainment of some students.

The most common thing that people consider to be an “at-risk youth” is kids that are in the foster system or have dealt with the foster system. Thought that it the case a lot of the time, there are many that come from low income homes and do not have a strong foundation for a great future.

What’s their story?

Interview with Rancher of 10 years:

  • Question 1: How did you discover the ranch?
  • Answer 1: I was on the free meal plan in school, so my parents were sent an application.
  • Question 2: How long have you been attending the ranch?
  • Answer 2: This is my tenth year attending the ranch.
  • Question 3: How has the Ranch impacted your life?
  • Answer 3: It has given me a home away from home. I have been able to find and create a family with the leaders and other ranchers that I have grown up with over the years
  • Questions 4: What is the greatest lesson that you have learned over these past four years?
  • Answer 4: God puts you where are and meets you where you are, but He loves you to much to let you stay there.

This is just one of the thousands of stories and views of a camp for an At-Risk youth who grew through the guidance of strong leaders. Don’t be afraid to participate with these students and get involved in their lives!
