Facebook logoIs it time to develop a professional social-media profile?

You might begin asking yourself this question now that you have graduated or have started a new job. For many individuals, social media were a way to connect with family and friends, but it can also be a tool to build your résumé, network and establish connections throughout the community.

According to Forbesone-third of employers use social media in their hiring process. Thus establishing and maintaining a professional presence on and offline makes a good impression on employers when they visit your profile.

For some individuals, the thought of revamping their Facebook profile for the professional world isn’t appealing. Many enjoy using the space as a social outlet where they can connect with friends, socialize and have fun.

Instead of changing your current profile to fit your professional needs, consider establishing another Facebook profile strictly for professional use. This account can serve as a networking tool or online résumé, and allows you to connect with current employers and leaders in your area.

Below are five tips to keep in mind when developing your professional online profile:

  1. Expand your online presence. First, use Facebook to develop a strong online presence. Once you have established this platform, think about expanding to another outlet such as LinkedIn, Twitter or YouTube.
As Barbara Safani, owner of Career Solvers, told the New York Times:

Not having an Internet presence can be damaging.

Expanding your network and online presence makes you more searchable and marketable to employers.

  2. Appearance is everything. Establishing a good first impression is essential when networking with potential employers. Reputation.com recommends having a professional photograph taken of yourself in business attire to use as your profile picture. Also, post photos of your accomplishments and interests such as volunteer projects and awards banquets.
  3. Be engaging. After your profile is established, begin networking and making connections. Add to your network former and current co-workers, as well as professional connections you have made. “Like” companies profiles that interest you, and share content that helps others understand your interests and abilities.
  4. Proofread your profile. Your professional presence is essentially an extension of your résumé. Be sure to proofread, edit, and update your Facebook profile.
  5. Communicate effectively. Use your new professional  profile as an opportunity to encourage dialogue between yourself and your contacts. Be sure to acknowledge comments, and respond to messages in a timely manner. Show your contacts that you are easy to communicate with and attentive to your contacts.
